Drill press (column drill)

The column drill press is the stationary, precision version of the drill: the spindle is guided by a vertical column that guarantees absolute perpendicularity between the bit and the work surface, eliminating the angular deviations inevitable with a hand drill. The operator lowers the spindle with a quill lever, applying controlled axial pressure, while rotation speed is selected via step pulleys or an electronic variator. Compared with hand drilling, it offers perfect batch repeatability, depth of drilling controlled by a mechanical stop, and the ability to use large-diameter bits (up to 30–50 mm) or special tools such as counterbores and bimetallic hole saws. Compact bench drill presses suit maker workshops; full-column models with a rotating table handle tall workpieces.
