Frequently asked questions

Can Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) be laser cut?

No: Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) is not suitable for laser cutting. However, it releases toxic fumes — machining is not recommended.

Can Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) be CNC machined?

Yes: Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) can be CNC machined.

Is Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) food safe?

No, Epoxy casting resin (low viscosity) is not considered food safe.

FumesToxic

Thermal decomposition of epoxy resin releases Bisphenol A (BPA) in gaseous form and fine epoxy-based particulate, both potentially carcinogenic. Strictly avoid any uncontrolled thermal processing without professional extraction and HEPA + activated carbon filtration.

CO₂: Thermoset: does not melt or vaporize cleanly. Decomposition under the CO2 laser beam is irregular combustion with burn marks and intense smoke. Cutting is impossible. Surface engraving on fully cured panels is technically possible but produces a burnt, rough groove.

Diode: Not applicable. Cured epoxy resin does not respond well to standard diode lasers.

Fiber: Not applicable in maker contexts.

ChippingTends to chip

Once fully cured, epoxy casting resin is CNC-machinable with excellent results and glossy surface finishes. Solid carbide bits, moderate speeds, steady feed rate. Generates fine particulate: mandatory respiratory protection. Beware of overheating, which can cause delamination or browning.

Post-processing

Sanding: Excellent progressive sanding with abrasive paper from 120 to 3000 grit. Final polishing with automotive buffing compound or orbital polisher yields optical transparency and a mirror-quality surface of the highest grade.

Primer: No primer required for direct gloss finish. If painting, the surface must be scuffed with 320–400 grit abrasive paper to ensure adhesion.

Gluing: Bonds excellently with itself (layer on uncured layer) or with other resin layers. On cured surfaces, it also adheres with structural two-component epoxy adhesives. Compatible with wood: forms a durable chemical/mechanical bond.

Over time: Excellent mechanical strength and optical clarity in the short term. Without UV stabilizers, it tends to yellow progressively within 6–18 months if exposed to direct sunlight. Formulations with anti-UV additives (HALS) or UV top-coat provide long-term protection.

Common defects

  • Air bubbles trapped during mixing or pouring — removable with a quick torch pass on the surface or vacuum degassing
  • Excessive exotherm in thick pours (>3cm in a single layer) — can cause cracking, browning or fire; always pour in 5–10mm layers
  • Early yellowing from UV exposure without a protective top-coat

Recommended PPE: gloves_nitrile_double, eye_protection_goggles, mask_p3, apron

Liquid uncured resin (component A) contains Bisphenol A and is a potent skin sensitizer. Repeated contact can cause permanent allergic dermatitis. The hardener (component B, amines) is corrosive to skin and eyes. Double-layer nitrile gloves, sealed goggles, apron, and forced ventilation are mandatory during mixing and pouring. The risk is high — do not underestimate it.
