Laser processing
Releases fumes containing irritating acrylic residues (MMA) and non-toxic but bothersome white mineral dust (from alumina trihydrate). Requires standard fume extraction hood.
CO₂: Excellent surface engraving, produces a very clean, high-definition matte groove. White and light-colored sheets become partially translucent, making it ideal for backlit signage. Cutting beyond minimal thicknesses (≤1 mm) is impractical due to the high internal mineral filler content.
Diode: Excellent engraving only on dark or colored sheets. Cutting impossible.
Fiber: Not suitable.
CNC / milling processing
Outstanding CNC machinability. Behaves exactly like a very dense, homogeneous hardwood, enabling flawless mirror surface finishes. Absolutely requires sharp carbide (tungsten carbide) tooling due to the abrasive mineral filler. Rapid feed rates to avoid localized overheating.
Plotter and thermoforming
Post-processing
Sanding: Extremely easy to sand and polish. Progressive wet sanding removes scratches and joints, making the surface a continuous monolith. Grit 180 → 240 → 400 → 800 → 1200 and final polish.
Primer: Surface painting is not necessary as the material is inherently waterproof, durable and through-colored.
Gluing: Bondable with specific two-component structural acrylic adhesives, often supplied in the same color as the sheet. After application and subsequent sanding of the glue bead, the joint is chemically welded and completely invisible to the naked eye.
Over time: Exceptional durability over time. Non-porous, water-repellent, stain-resistant and antibacterial material. Highly stable outdoors if UV-stabilized.
Common defects
- Extremely rapid CNC cutter wear if made of standard HSS rather than carbide
- Micro-chipping on the perimeter if feed rate is too slow or the tool is worn
- Local melting of the acrylic binder if the cutter dwells on the spinning workpiece
Safety
Recommended PPE: mask_p3, eye_protection
The high mineral alumina content makes it naturally fireproof and self-extinguishing. Protect airways from the very fine dust during dry sanding.
Availability and formats
Commercial formats: sheets 6mm, sheets 12mm, sheets 19mm
