Sliding compound miter saw
The sliding compound miter saw (or radial chop saw) specialises in precise cross-cuts and angle cuts on battens, sections and profiles of small to medium cross-section. Unlike the table saw, the blade descends from above onto the stationary workpiece on the base table, with the ability to rotate the vertical axis (miter angle) and tilt the blade (bevel angle); in the sliding version the arm also travels forward to cut wider stock. It is the go-to machine for picture frames, skirting boards, door frames, angled beams and any work requiring repeatable compound cuts (miter plus bevel) at high speed. Compact bench-top sliding compound miter saws are among the most common tools in maker workshops for their combination of small footprint and versatility.
