Laser processing
Clean marking does not generate hazardous fumes if the material is free of oils. Cutting produces chromium oxides in small quantities: ventilation recommended for prolonged exposure.
CO₂: Reflects the CO2 beam like all stainless steels. Cutting is impossible at hobby level; surface marking is feasible with chemical marking sprays (Cermark).
Diode: Impossible to cut or mark directly with diode lasers due to the high reflectance of the metal surface.
Fiber: Excellent with fiber laser. Annealing marking produces permanent high-contrast marks. Cutting is possible on thin gauges (≤3mm) with adequate power.
CNC / milling processing
Significantly easier to machine than 304 and 316. Being ferritic (not austenitic) it is not subject to work-hardening that destroys tools on austenitic grades. Still requires moderate cutting speeds and constant cooling to prevent overheating.
Post-processing
Sanding: Similar to 304. Use zirconia or ceramic belts. Wet sand to dissipate heat. The lower thermal expansion coefficient compared to 304 reduces deformation during processing.
Primer: mandatory. Painting requires epoxy primers or adhesion promoters specific for stainless steels. Corrosion resistance is lower than 304: in aggressive or marine environments it may develop pitting rust spots.
Gluing: Bondable with two-component structural epoxy adhesives after heavy sanding and degreasing with acetone.
Over time: Fair corrosion resistance in indoor and moderately humid environments. Not suitable for marine or chloride-rich environments: in such conditions prefer 316. It is magnetic, unlike 304.
Common defects
- Formation of pitting rust stains in the presence of chlorides or prolonged marine environments
- Discolouration of heat-affected welding zones if not properly treated with pickling paste
Safety
Recommended PPE: gloves_cut_resistant, eye_protection
Chips are sharp. Wear protective gloves during handling. When machining, chromium fumes require adequate ventilation.
Availability and formats
