FumesVentilation required

Fumes from burning natural wood. Not classified as particularly toxic but require extraction to protect optics and operator health.

CO₂: The easiest wood to cut with CO2 laser: 10–20 W are sufficient for sheets up to 5 mm. Very clean edges with minimal charring. Fast feed rate, low power for surface engraving.

Diode: Excellent even with low-power diode lasers (5–10 W). The open cellular structure absorbs the wavelength well. Excellent results on 1–3 mm sheets.

Fiber: Not applicable to wood.

CNC / milling processing

MachinabilityYes
Tool wearLow

CNC machinable with sharp tools and reduced feed rates. The very open fibrous structure tends to fray if end mills are not perfectly sharp. Prefer single-flute (O-flute) end mills for chip evacuation. No coolant required.

Plotter and thermoforming

Cutting plotterYes

Cuttable with plotter cutter on thin sheets (up to 2 mm) with a deep-cut blade. Medium pressure.

Post-processing

Sanding: Sands easily with any grit. Progress from 120 to 240 along the grain. Take care not to remove too much material due to the low density.

Primer: mandatory. The porous structure absorbs a lot of primer and finishes. Apply at least one diluted base coat before the final finish to seal the pores.

Gluing: Can be glued with cyanoacrylate (CA), PVA and epoxy resin. CA is the classic choice for modelling due to fast set time. Very absorbent bonding surfaces.

Seasoning: Commercially available already kiln-dried. Store in a dry environment to avoid warping.

Over time: Sensitive to moisture and compression. In stable environments it lasts a long time but dents easily. Not suitable for structural outdoor applications.

Common defects

  • Edge fraying with blunt tools or excessive feed rate
  • Denting under even minimal pressure due to very low density
  • Hygroscopic deformation if exposed to humidity changes

Recommended PPE: mask_p3, eye_protection

Very flammable material: the porous structure and low density make it a rapid fuel. Keep away from heat sources. Processing dust is respirable — use a mask. When laser cutting: always supervise the operation.
