UHMWPE
Frequently asked questions
Can UHMWPE be laser cut?
No: UHMWPE is not suitable for laser cutting. Adequate extraction/ventilation is required.
Can UHMWPE be CNC machined?
Yes: UHMWPE can be CNC machined.
Is UHMWPE food safe?
Yes, UHMWPE is food safe even in its raw state.

Laser processing
If accidentally melted, releases long-chain aliphatic hydrocarbons. Not acutely toxic but irritating; ventilate the workspace.
CO₂: Cannot be cut or engraved: melts without vaporising, producing drips and completely irregular edges. The ultra-long polymer chain does not break via ablation.
Diode: Not applicable. Same behaviour as CO₂: melting without ablation.
Fiber: Not applicable.
CNC / milling processing
Excellent CNC machinability: produces clean chips and does not gum up easily despite the low Tg. Its high melt viscosity reduces the risk of melting and smearing. Ideal for sliding guides, wear pads and plain bearings. Medium feed rates, moderate RPM, compressed air for chip evacuation.
Post-processing
Sanding: Difficult to sand due to the waxy surface and low coefficient of friction. Abrasive paper slips and clogs. Prefer mechanical machining.
Primer: mandatory. Adhesively inert surface, like all polyolefins. Requires plasma, corona or flame pre-treatment for any bonding or painting.
Gluing: Virtually unbondable with conventional methods. Use mechanical fasteners or ultrasonic welding. UHMWPE is specifically chosen because nothing sticks to it.
Over time: Excellent abrasion resistance (better than steel in some applications), chemical resistance and impact resistance even at cryogenic temperatures. Better UV resistance than HDPE. Decade-long service life in industrial applications.
Common defects
- Practically impossible to glue or paint without specialist surface pre-treatment
- Not injection-mouldable or FDM-printable due to the extreme melt viscosity
- High thermal expansion — allow generous tolerances in mating parts
Safety
Very safe material. FDA-approved for food contact and used in biocompatible orthopaedic implants. No handling risk in solid state.
Availability and formats
Commercial formats: sheets 10–100mm, round and flat bars, tubes, blocks
