Laser processing
Contains zinc and copper: possible release of zinc oxide fumes under extreme heating. Ventilation recommended.
CO₂: Like all aluminums, strongly reflects the CO2 beam. Cutting is impossible at maker level; marking requires chemical marking sprays (Cermark).
Diode: Impossible to cut or mark directly with diode laser.
Fiber: Good with fiber laser, same performance as 7075-T6. Marking by oxidative blackening effective.
CNC / milling processing
Machinability identical to 7075-T6. In Italy, turners and millers almost exclusively use the term 'Ergal'. Cutting parameters are identical to 7075: rigid machines, emulsion cooling for deep roughing, cutters with specific geometry for high-strength aluminum.
Post-processing
Sanding: Identical to 7075-T6. Wet silicon carbide paper. High hardness requires more passes for finishing.
Primer: mandatory. Like 7075, corrosion resistance lower than 6061. Epoxy primer mandatory for outdoor use.
Gluing: Bondable with structural epoxies after degreasing and sanding the surface.
Over time: Identical to 7075-T6: poor atmospheric corrosion resistance. Requires surface protection for outdoor use.
Common defects
- Intergranular corrosion in humid environments if not adequately protected
- Higher tool wear than 6061/6082 if cutting parameters are not optimised for the high strength
Safety
Recommended PPE: eye_protection, mask_p2
Contains zinc and copper: not suitable for food contact. Mandatory extraction during machining due to zinc dust.
Availability and formats
Commercial formats: round and square bars, sheets, milling blocks
