Laser processing
The adhesives in the laminated version release formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during laser cutting. Mandatory extraction with active carbon filter. Do not process in enclosed spaces without a dedicated extraction system.
CO₂: Behaviour similar to hardwood. CO2 40–80 W for thicknesses 3–6 mm at medium feed rate. Clean edges and excellent engraving contrast. Note: contains adhesives (urea-formaldehyde or industrial PVA) that produce additional fumes.
Diode: Workable with high-power diodes (20 W+) on thicknesses up to 4 mm. Multiple passes needed for a complete cut.
Fiber: Not applicable.
CNC / milling processing
High surface hardness and very strong longitudinal fibres. Use sharp carbide end mills. The laminated structure can delaminate at edges if passes are too aggressive. Moderate feed rate, limited depth of cut.
Post-processing
Sanding: Sand following the orientation of the surface fibres. Grits 120 → 180 → 240. The surface is very uniform and responds well to sanding.
Primer: Compact surface with low porosity. For opaque coatings, apply a light primer coat to improve adhesion.
Gluing: Can be glued with D3/D4 PVA and polyurethane adhesive. The smooth surface requires light sanding before gluing to improve mechanical adhesion.
Seasoning: The lamination process reduces hygrometric movement compared to raw bamboo. Store in environments with controlled humidity.
Over time: Good dimensional stability compared to solid wood. Adhesives can degrade over time in high-humidity environments. Not suitable for outdoor use without adequate protective finish.
Common defects
- Delamination at edges under aggressive machining or prolonged moisture exposure
- Toxic fumes from adhesives during thermal operations
- Colour variations between laminate layers visible on cut edges
Safety
Recommended PPE: mask_p3, eye_protection
Industrial adhesives (urea-formaldehyde) release formaldehyde during thermal processing and sanding. Use extraction and P3 mask in all operations that generate dust or heat.
Availability and formats
Commercial formats: panels 2440×1220mm, sheets 3–20mm, small boards
