Laser processing
Fumes are of purely cellulosic plant origin (uncoated paper). The smell is that characteristic of burnt paper, non-toxic. Standard extraction is required to keep optics clean and remove odour. Be careful with coated paper or paper with finishes: it may contain additives generating additional fumes.
CO₂: Common paper is one of the easiest materials to cut with a CO2 laser. It requires very low power (3–8W) at high speed (200–400mm/s) to avoid burns, halos, or yellowing. Excess power leads to browned edges and possible ignition. Standard white office paper is ideal for testing and prototyping.
Diode: Fast cutting with a 5W+ diode laser at high speed. Be careful with white paper which partially reflects the blue laser: use a test sample to calibrate power.
Fiber: Not applicable.
CNC / milling processing
Not workable with CNC and traditional milling bits: the paper would tear immediately. For mechanical cutting, die-cutters or blade cutters are used.
Plotter and thermoforming
Ideal material for blade plotters: cuts with minimal pressure and standard blades. A sticky mat is essential to prevent the sheet from moving during cutting.
Post-processing
Sanding: Not sandable.
Gluing: Excellent bonding with any type of adhesive: PVA glue, glue stick, double-sided tape, hot glue. Paper's porosity ensures fast and strong bonds.
Over time: Common paper yellows due to oxidation of wood fibers (if not acid-free) and exposure to light. It degrades rapidly in humid environments. Acid-free paper has a much longer life.
Common defects
- Yellowing and browning of laser edges with excessive power
- Curling and undulation from moisture absorption
- Tearing on the laser bed if not adequately anchored with tape or magnets on the edges
Safety
Common paper is highly flammable. Never leave the laser unattended during processing and ensure air assist is always active. Keep a suitable fire extinguisher for paper (Class A) at hand.
